SUMMARY:CANCELED - Live Concert - Frances Luke Accord
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHAREDue to the health concerns regarding public gatherings this particular session has been canceled.\n  \n  \n  \nWhen Nicholas Gunty and Brian Powers put their songs and their voices together\, there is a delicate and powerful magic that commands the room to attention. The duo is known as Frances Luke Accord\, and they are what NPR’s Mountain Stage calls “the definition of lean-in music.” Their soulful\, effortless branch of indie-folk is orchestrated with spare and sophisticated acoustic threads woven into a lush backdrop for their intimate melodies. Rich\, up-close tenor harmonies lend their timeless songwriting an urgency that honors the Simon & Garfunkel comparisons but pushes beyond into the world of Bon Iver\, Jose Gonzalez\, and progressive folk music. \n  \n \n  \nBoth raised in South Bend\, IN\, Gunty and Powers met and began performing together during their time at the University of Notre Dame. Their first release\, Kandote\, was a bold intercultural collaboration with the Barefoot Truth Children’s Choir in Uganda\, a not-for-profit effort which provides ongoing support to the choir to this day. Relocating to Chicago in 2013\, the duo honed their songwriting craft while releasing two more self-produced EPs\, laying the groundwork for their breakthrough debut full-length\, Fluke\, in 2016. This immersive\, philosophically rich album set them off on their first national tour\, which included support dates with Darlingside\, Anaïs Mitchell\, and The Ballroom Thieves. \nNow a distance band\, Gunty and Powers continue to explore their combined voice with a renewed sense of growth and brotherhood from their respective homes in Philadelphia and Chicago. “Maria” (2018) and “Silver & Gold EP” (2019) reflect this evolution with a fresh vitality and set the bar high for their upcoming sophomore LP\, coming in 2020. \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \n“…ARE THE DEFINITION OF LEAN-IN MUSIC.”\n– JONI DEUTSCH\, NPR’S MOUNTAIN STAGE \n“…ARE SOME OF OUR VERY FAVORITE MUSICIANS\, SONGWRITERS\, AND PEOPLE.”\n– DARLINGSIDE \n“…AN ECHO OF SIMON & GARFUNKEL\, THE QUIRKY WEIRDNESS OF SUFJAN STEVENS\, AND THE MELODIC PROGRESSION OF JOSH RITTER…FLA HAVE TAKEN ALL OF THIS AND TURNED IT INTO SOMETHING ENTIRELY UNIQUE.”\n-PURE M MAGAZINE \n  \n \n“Indie folk at its finest” – Milk Crater \n“People should hear this music and say this is something I want to hear more of and know more about. This is not foreign music – this is music that’s got a precedent set many years ago. And when you hear somebody do it this well\, you kind of just have to pay attention to it.” – Richard Milne\, WXRT Chicago \n‘If you like killer harmonies\, you will LOVE Frances Luke Accord’ – Jeanette Sangston\, The Revue \n[Frances Luke Accord] have their fingers in a sound that’s timeless yet absolutely necessary in an increasingly static musical landscape. – Joshua Pickard\, Nooga \nLearn more about Frances Luke Accord\nYouTube \nWebsite \nPLEASE SHARE

SUMMARY:Live Music - Gabe and Richard Baillargeon
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHARESaturday\, February 1st @ 6pm\, the First Street Community Center’s Uptown Theatre will be hosting Gabe and Richard Baillargeon in a rare father and son duo performance with many special guest performers.  Be a part of the audience for this landmark\, informal\, recorded concert! \nIowa-based Richard Baillargeon has entertained Iowa since the earliest days of the Waubeek Trackers Band. His talent was delivered directly through the gene pool\, enhanced by his natural enthusiasm and warm humor. Gabe was a fixture at the Stone City General Store Sundays before he moved. Gabe now lives in Boulder\, CO. \nBoth Richard and Gabe Baillargeon have been bringing Eastern Iowa the music of many others as “soundmen” on the circuit in the Midwest. Another talent they share! \nThe father/son duo will share the stage with a wide variety of their musician friends\, starting with Waubeek Trackers members and including other talented friends. \nWHEN:  Saturday\, February 1st @6pm\, doors open at 5:15pm \nCOST:  Free will offering \nWEBSITE:  Gabe Baillargeon’s Facebook page \nQUESTIONS:  Contact Gabe Baillargeon\, kyotemoonaudio@gmail.com\, or call 763-339-2776. \n\nThe LilFest Series brings world quality performances to intimate concert settings\, which are best for both the audience and the performer. SUMMARY:Live Music - Kevin Burt – Heartland and Soul
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHAREIowa-based Kevin Burt’s vocals\, blues songwriting and music arrangements are absolutely amazing – extremely powerful\, rich\, warm\, expressive and exploding with SOUL! \n\nFor more than 25 years Kevin Burt has been electrifying audiences throughout the Midwest dispelling the myth that true blues has no roots in Iowa. His soul-inspired presentation is unique which consistently get him compared to a range of artists like Bill Withers and Aaron Neville\, with the ability to build an audience rapport that has been compared to B.B. King. \n\n\nKevin is a self-taught musician (vocals\, harmonica\, and guitar) whose smooth\, warm vocal presentation sets a mood of relaxed exhilaration\, with a welcome mixture of serious music and infectious humor audiences of all ages seem to enjoy. His voice and presence are powerful. His unique delivery ranges from the sweetest\, fullest\, juiciest come-on to the most playful growl. \n\nHe is a 2018 International Blues Challenge Winner in 3 categories:  1st place Solo/Duo\, best Solo/Duo guitarist\, & best Harmonica Player award.  Recently also a 2019 Blues Music Award Nominee for Debut Album.  This Waterloo and Mount Pleasant kid’s head is not turned\, however\, and he’s a deep and wide supporter of Iowa music\, musicians\, and music education. \n \nKevin’s talent\, character (and luck\, he would tell you) have taken him to the top of the industry. His new Heartland and Soul album was recorded with the nationally known top sidemen. D’Mar Martin on drums\, Jon Otis (Johnny Otis’ son!) on percussion\, and the bassist to the stars\, Jerry Jemmott! Grammy award winning Jemmott is a true living legend\, playing on so many timeless soul\, blues\, & jazz classics\, from B.B. King’s “Thrill Is Gone” to Gil Scott Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” to Aretha Franklin’s “Think”. \nKevin is also recognized as one of the Midwest’s top blues heritage educators. Governor Chet Culver gave this honor to him in February ‘09. Kevin is a registered artist\, and artist educator with the state of Iowa Arts Council. He has also written and published a classroom harmonica method book called “Just Play It: an introduction to blues harmonica.” His approach is simple: education through entertainment. His program has been going strong since 1994. Kevin continues this work as well as his community work with children and the arts. \nKevin performs between 325 and 400 shows a year\, and he holds nothing back night after night and audiences love that – and they return again and again for more! \nBurt is a serious songwriter who knows how to craft music to fit his personality\, and no one delivers this brand of music better than he does. After listening to Heartland and Soul\, one should have no problem seeing why he took all the top honors at the blues competition – this guy is a real winner. –  Living Blues \nIn this day and age where celebrity status is often conveyed on people with little discernible skills or talent\, it is refreshing when the spotlight finally lands on someone who has worked hard\, paid their dues\, and actually deserves recognition for their talent. Such is the case with Kevin “B.F.” Burt\, the singer and multi-instrumentalist who created quite a buzz on Beale St. in Memphis during the first three days of this year’s International Blues Challenge\, winning 3 awards !! – 1st place in the Slolo/Duo category\, the Cigar Box Guitar Award for best guitarist in Solo/Duo category\, and the Lee Oskar Award for best harmonica player!” – Mark Thompson\, BLUES BLAST MAGAZINE \n\nTickets\n$20 Gen. He left for larger venues in Chicago\, Florida and on the west coast. But he came back to Iowa in the 1980s and has become a jazz icon in eastern Iowa since returning to his home state. Iowans remember fondly the jazz club Eddie and his wife Dallis opened on Mount Vernon Road in the 1990s. But Iowans weren’t the only ones to frequent Eddie’s place. Travelers from other states came to this club for the chic décor and the unforgettable nights of music. Jazz musicians stopped by\, too\, after finishing up a gig in the area. The club was forced to close because of road widening. Eddie now plays regularly all over eastern Iowa\, as well as in the Chicago area and the Twin Cities. \nRich Martin’s career began in college where he was a drummer and a vibist. He took an extended break from performing to teach at Cornell College. But the music called him back and he began sitting in with Eddie’s trio fifteen years ago\, while still teaching. He is now a full-time member of the group. \nDave Richter comes from Dubuque to perform in Meet Me in New Orleans. He is well-known in northeast Iowa as an accomplished guitarist\, bassist\, and banjo player. He performs in Iowa\, Wisconsin\, and the Chicago area. \nTim Crumley performs frequently with the Eddie Piccard Jazz Quartet\, as well as a number of regional ensembles\, including Ashanti\, The Rusty Johnson Group\, and the John Shultz Trio. Tim is a lyrical and sensitive drummer who is always engaged and engaging. \nPLEASE SHARE

SUMMARY:Radoslav Lorkovic plays Mount Vernon's LilFest
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHARERadoslav Lorković began touring at age 20 with Iowa City’s Bo Ramsey and the Sliders. Lorković entered the band having mastered the styles of boogie-woogie greats such as Albert Ammons\, Pete Johnson\, Freddie Slack etc.. Ramsey’s influence drove Lorković deeper to the core of the blues. The music of Howlin’ Wolf\, Muddy Waters and Little Walter shifted Lorković’s focus to the basics as he began to draw from the styles of Otis Spann and Pinetop Perkins. \nSeveral years later Lorković and Ramsey joined forces with Greg Brown adding musical authenticity to his deep Iowa Roots. At this time Lorković was simultaneously brushing up on his classical heritage and looking south to the polyrhythmic sounds of Professor Longhair and James Booker. He had picked up Tex-Mex and Zydeco accordion as well. \nIn 1990 he made his solo recording debut.  Six CDs later\, Lorković currently tours the world regularly appearing at prestigious events such as the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival\, WOMAD\, Winnipeg\, Calgary\, Edmonton and Ottawa folk festivals\, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, Mountain Stage\, Prairie Home Companion\, eTown as well as a litany of Italian castles and villas. \nDrawing from a multitude of influences ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to the rawest\, most basic blues\, country and soul\, Radoslav Lorković has taken on an unusually broad musical spectrum and refined it into his distinctive piano style. \nHis tenure on the R&B and folk circuits has culminated in five critically acclaimed solo recordings and numerous appearances on the recordings of and performances with artists including Odetta\, Jimmy LaFave\, Ribbon of Highway Woody Guthrie Tribute\, Greg Brown\, Richard Shindell\, Ellis Paul\, Ronny Cox\, Dave Moore\, Andy White\, and Bo Ramsey. \nHis thirty year touring career has led him from the taverns of the upper Mississippi River to the castles of Italy\, The Canary Islands\, The Yup’ik villages of Alaska\, The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBorn in Zagreb\, Croatia in 1958\, Lorković’s initial exposure to music can be attributed to two grandmothers. Antonija\, his maternal Grandmother\, sang him Croatian\, Slovenian and Czech folk songs since birth. At age one he was reported to be singing back on pitch. \nBy age three he was putting on floor shows for his grandfather and friends who would respond by showering him with coins yelling “pivaj Radoslav pivaj!” During this time classical music played in the home constantly due to the influence of his paternal grandmother Melita Lorković\, a internationally renown classical pianist. After this blend of central European musical influences Radoslav moved to the United States at age six. He had a foothold on a classical music career when at age fourteen he was sidetracked by a blues scale that a friend had taught him. \nTicket Prices\n$5 for students\, General Admission $20\, Sponsor $50.  Tickets can be purchased in person or online at https://lorkovic.bpt.me \nGeneral Information About the Concert\nA LilFest Concert is an intimate concert in a relaxed setting. SUMMARY:Emmy Nominated Tim Grimm plays LilFest Jan 26 - You're Invited!
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHAREWelcome to another year of LilFest Concerts at the Uptown Theatre. Celebrate the opening of the 2019 Season with Tim Grimm on Saturday\, January 26 at 7:30 PM.  Doors open at 7:15 PM. \nTim’s songs are full of the rural rumblings that have shaped his life—rich with descriptive details\, and sung with warmth and intimacy—recognizing the inextinguishable national romance with the idea of the family farm and the vanishing landscape of rural America. He released the album\, Heart Land in 2000\, and on the strength of that recording\, was named 2000’s “Best Discovery in Roots/Americana Music” by The Chicago Sun-Times. His albums Coyotes Dream and Names\, led to his being named “2004 Male Artist of The Year” by the Freeform American Roots DJs. \nHe has released 10 solo albums since 2000 (including the newest- The Turning Point)\, and 2 collaborations- Amber Waves (with Jason Wilber) and Wilderness Plots. \nEmmy-nominated Tim Grimm is a bit of a Renaissance man in the performing arts world. He has for the past 15 years\, blended his love for songwriting\, travel\, rural life\, and the storytelling of acting (theatre\, film and television). His most recent recording- A Stranger in this Time (2017)\, is a collaboration with his wife Jan and sons Connor and Jackson — the “Family Band”. In the fall of 2016 this same group recorded the single – Woody’s Landlord — which was the #1 song on Folk Radio for the year. Tim’s previous recording\, The Turning Point\, produced the #1 song on Folk Radio in 2014: King of the Folksingers. It was a particularly gratifying honor\, given that the song is a tribute to Tim’s friend and musical icon\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. Tim’s history with Ramblin’ Jack goes back 30 years– beginning with a bicycle ride that led to The Newport Folk Festival. Tim contributed liner notes to Jack’s Grammy winning album\, The South Coast (1995). Jack recorded Buffalo Skinners with Tim on Tim’s album\, Coyote’s Dream (2003)\, and\, most recently\, King of the Folksingers. \n” The Turning Point is one of this year’s best (cds). Tim Grimm has a taste for melody and keen insight that few of his colleagues can boast. Along with greats like Greg Brown and John Gorka\, Tim Grimm is in my opinion among the best singer-songwriters in the United States.” \n–THE LONG JOURNEY- Roots and Country Music- ITALY \nAfter college (Earlham)\, Grimm pursed an MFA in Theatre at The University of Michigan and from there worked in Regional Theatre\, settling in Chicago. In Chicago\, in addition to his theatre work\, he studied briefly at the Old Town School of Folk Music and began writing songs and performing. He put together a band\, Tim Grimm and The True Hearts and released 2 cds–True Heart\, Kind Mind and Broken Down Palace. At which point\, “Hollywood called”\, and Tim put down his guitar and pen\, and didn’t really pick them up for close to 10 years. \nAfter several years (1990s) working in Los Angeles (where he co-starred for 2 seasons on the NBC drama Reasonable Doubts\, worked on Clear and Present Danger with Harrison Ford\, and appeared in several films and TV projects)\, Tim returned home to Indiana. He grew up in the woods and small town settings of southern Indiana\, son of schoolteachers and grandson of farmers\, and his return home was a conscious choice to live a life of significance rather than one of “success’. He now lives with his wife on 80 acres close to where he grew up. \nIn 2005\, Grimm was asked to compose music and act in a production of The Grapes of Wrath at Indiana Repertory Theatre and Syracuse Stage in New York. His song from the play–The Peoples Highway\, made it onto his next album\, The Back Fields\, which was subsequently named Americana Album of the Year by the Just Plain Folks Music Awards– the world’s largest independent music awards. \nIn 2007\, Grimm put together a concept cd with several of the Midwest’s finest songwriter’s— Krista Detor\, Carrie Newcomer\, Tom Roznowski\, and Michael White. The recording\, Wilderness Plots\, was drawn from the short stories of noted author\, Scott Russell Sanders\, and explored the settling of the American Wilderness in the Ohio River Valley Region between The Revolutionary War and The Civil War. Two PBS programs have explored Wilderness Plots– the first\, a documentary on the story and song\, and the second a full Wilderness Plots- In Concert (2012). SUMMARY:Live Music - Dave Moore and Phil Heywood
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHARELILFEST PRESENTS\nAn intimate concert in a relaxed setting on Saturday\, November 17th at 7:30 pm (doors open at 7:15 pm) in the Uptown Theatre. \nSongwriter and instrumentalist Dave Moore (guitar\, accordion\, harmonica) and finger-style guitarist extraordinaire Phil Heywood.  Recently Dave Moore and Phil Heywood have been sharing stages\, trading songs and embroidering rich instrumental accompaniment on each other’s songs and melodies. \n\n \nEastern Iowa’s Dave Moore writes and plays guitar\, button accordion and harmonica in a country blues/folk and conjunto style. He is a veteran of A Prairie Home Companion\, winner of Iowa Arts Council grants and recipient of the 2017 Folk Tradition Midwest Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Folk Alliance Region Midwest (FARM). \nOne of the finest songwriters to come out of Iowa\, Moore has recorded three albums with Red House Records and has written songs recorded by Lowen & Navarro\, Greg Brown and Larry Penn. His instrumental prowess on harmonica and accordion makes him an in-demand session player as well; he has appeared on recordings with Greg Brown\, Garrison Keillor\, David Zollo\, Brother Trucker and many more. Moore has opened for such greats as Townes Van Zandt\, John Hammond Jr. and Los Lobos\, and shared the stage with Chet Atkins\, Nick Lowe and Beausoleil\, among others. \n \nPhil Heywood plays fingerstyle guitar with a bluesy swing and a bucketful of whatever it takes to turn an instrumental piece into an arresting lyrical narrative. His lucid playing encompasses the down-home rhythmic groove of a Mississippi John Hurt or Leadbelly\, and the sheer fluidity and melodic flair of such contemporaries as Leo Kottke. The internationally renowned Kottke once handpicked Mr. Heywood to tour and perform duets with him. A soul-satisfying instrumentalist\, Heywood draws listeners in with his voice as well\, singing in a warm\, plainspoken baritone that blends smoothly with his rock-solid guitar work. \nWhile born and bred in Mount Vernon\, Iowa\, Heywood has been based in Minneapolis-St. Paul since the mid-1980s\, performing locally and regionally while also establishing himself in the greater guitar and acoustic music world. In 1986 he won the National Fingerpicking Championship\, and followed up a year later by winning the American Fingerstyle Guitar Festival Competition. He has played on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion with guitar legend Chet Atkins\, performed with fellow acoustic guitar luminaries Tim Sparks\, Pat Donohue and Peter Lang\, and opened shows for such artists as Norman Blake\, Greg Brown\, John Renbourn\, Chris Smither\, and John Hammond. \nPhil Heywood has recorded six solo CDs\, some of which will be available at the concert. \nHeywood and Moore will be available for phone interviews and other press inquiries in advance of the show by calling or texting Nancy Emrich Freeman at 847-256-0000. \nNOTE:  If you reserve an early dinner before the concert at the Palisades Café\, mention LilFest\, and receive the evening’s LilFest special. \n\nTickets\nAdvance concert tickets may be purchased at: \nBauman’s of Mount Vernon\nHelios Stitches’ n Stuff \nor online via Brown Paper Tickets \nor you can by tickets at the door. \nCost\n$5 Student / $20 Gen. SUMMARY:Meet Me Where They Play the Blues - Eddie Piccard Jazz and The Busch Brothers
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHARE“Meet Me Where They Play the Blues!” That is the invitation from jazz musician Eddie Piccard. \nThe Eddie Piccard Quartet and the Busch Brothers will once again join forces at the First Street Community Center in Mount Vernon on Saturday\, November 10\, at 7:30 pm. \nThe program will likely include “Pete Kelly’s Blues\,” “The St. Louis Blues\,” “The Salt Lake City Blues\,” and many other blues songs and traditional jazz numbers. \n“The blues is quintessentially American\,” Eddie says. “The music grew out of the songs of Afro-American slaves and field hands in the South. The blues contains so many emotions\, including joy\, sorrow\, and determination. The words may at first sound down\, but the music always brings you up. \nWe love playing for the audience that comes to the Mount Vernon events\, and we know people will love hearing this music. It’s classic.” \n\nEddie Piccard Jazz plays hot traditional favorites and cool Shearing melodies\, as well as warm Latin tunes.  Eddie will be on piano and vocals\, Craig Dove on bass\, Jon Wilson on drums\, Rich Martin on vibes\, and Dave Richter on guitar. \nFor this show they will be joined by the Busch Boys–Marty on trombone\, Larry on trumpet\, and Luke on clarinet. \nThe “Busch Boys”  are very happy to join the Eddie Piccard Quintet for this evening of music.  Larry Busch is a veteran of the Guy Lombardo\, Wayne King\, and the Al Pierson Orchestras.  He has been leading his own big band for many years and is currently the leader of the Dixieland Allstars.  Trombonist Marty has toured with Al Cobine\, Johnny Mathis\, Dick Jurgens\, The American Vintage Orchestra\, and the Larry Busch Big Band. Luke  has played with the Dixieland Allstars\, the Mad City Funk\, and his own SKA band. \nEddie Piccard Jazz and the Busch Brothers\nTICKETS\nTickets for the performance are $15 and can be purchased at Bauman’s Clothing Store in Mount Vernon (319) 895-8692. They can also be bought at the performance.  Patrons are welcome to bring a favorite beverage and purchase a Community Center cup or bring a clean Community Center cup from home to use in the Theatre space. \n\n \nEddie Piccard grew up in eastern Iowa\, and began playing music on his grandmother’s piano.
