SUMMARY:Radoslav Lorkovic plays Mount Vernon's LilFest
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHARERadoslav Lorković began touring at age 20 with Iowa City’s Bo Ramsey and the Sliders. Lorković entered the band having mastered the styles of boogie-woogie greats such as Albert Ammons\, Pete Johnson\, Freddie Slack etc.. Ramsey’s influence drove Lorković deeper to the core of the blues. The music of Howlin’ Wolf\, Muddy Waters and Little Walter shifted Lorković’s focus to the basics as he began to draw from the styles of Otis Spann and Pinetop Perkins. \nSeveral years later Lorković and Ramsey joined forces with Greg Brown adding musical authenticity to his deep Iowa Roots. At this time Lorković was simultaneously brushing up on his classical heritage and looking south to the polyrhythmic sounds of Professor Longhair and James Booker. He had picked up Tex-Mex and Zydeco accordion as well. \nIn 1990 he made his solo recording debut.  Six CDs later\, Lorković currently tours the world regularly appearing at prestigious events such as the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival\, WOMAD\, Winnipeg\, Calgary\, Edmonton and Ottawa folk festivals\, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival\, Mountain Stage\, Prairie Home Companion\, eTown as well as a litany of Italian castles and villas. \nDrawing from a multitude of influences ranging from elegant classical and jazz styles to the rawest\, most basic blues\, country and soul\, Radoslav Lorković has taken on an unusually broad musical spectrum and refined it into his distinctive piano style. \nHis tenure on the R&B and folk circuits has culminated in five critically acclaimed solo recordings and numerous appearances on the recordings of and performances with artists including Odetta\, Jimmy LaFave\, Ribbon of Highway Woody Guthrie Tribute\, Greg Brown\, Richard Shindell\, Ellis Paul\, Ronny Cox\, Dave Moore\, Andy White\, and Bo Ramsey. \nHis thirty year touring career has led him from the taverns of the upper Mississippi River to the castles of Italy\, The Canary Islands\, The Yup’ik villages of Alaska\, The Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nBorn in Zagreb\, Croatia in 1958\, Lorković’s initial exposure to music can be attributed to two grandmothers. Antonija\, his maternal Grandmother\, sang him Croatian\, Slovenian and Czech folk songs since birth. At age one he was reported to be singing back on pitch. \nBy age three he was putting on floor shows for his grandfather and friends who would respond by showering him with coins yelling “pivaj Radoslav pivaj!” During this time classical music played in the home constantly due to the influence of his paternal grandmother Melita Lorković\, a internationally renown classical pianist. After this blend of central European musical influences Radoslav moved to the United States at age six. He had a foothold on a classical music career when at age fourteen he was sidetracked by a blues scale that a friend had taught him. \nTicket Prices\n$5 for students\, General Admission $20\, Sponsor $50.  Tickets can be purchased in person or online at https://lorkovic.bpt.me \nGeneral Information About the Concert\nA LilFest Concert is an intimate concert in a relaxed setting. Bring your own beverages and snacks into the theatre with purchase of the Uptown Theatre venue’s First St. Community Center drink cup ($5). \nRemember: You can reserve an early dinner before the concert at the Palisades Café\, mention LilFest\, and receive the evening’s LilFest special. \nMore at: www.radoslavlorkovic.com \nPLEASE SHARE

SUMMARY:The Black Panthers
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHARECome and join us for a presentation and conversation about the Black Panthers with a woman who worked for them in the 1970’s.  You may be surprised to learn about the many positive things the Black Panthers were a part of.  The talk will be on Thursday\, Nov. 7 @ 6:30 PM upstairs in the Library. \n\nThe talk will be presented by Christine Flavin.  She will talk about how she became involved in the civil rights movement when she was in high school. She later went on to attend the University of California\, Berkeley in 1971.  She was very involved with both the anti-Vietnam war efforts and the civil rights movements at that time.  One of the aspects of her involvement was to work for the Black Panther Party in Oakland\, CA (where she lived while attending Berkeley). \nShe will give a bit of history of the Panther movement and its residual effects on social justice.  She will also try to explain and diffuse the negative stereotypes that exist to this day about the purpose and the mission of the Black Panther political party. \nQuestions\, call Kate Rose at 319.651.7326. \nPLEASE SHARE

SUMMARY:Live Music - Kevin Burt – Heartland and Soul
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHAREIowa-based Kevin Burt’s vocals\, blues songwriting and music arrangements are absolutely amazing – extremely powerful\, rich\, warm\, expressive and exploding with SOUL! \n\nFor more than 25 years Kevin Burt has been electrifying audiences throughout the Midwest dispelling the myth that true blues has no roots in Iowa. His soul-inspired presentation is unique which consistently get him compared to a range of artists like Bill Withers and Aaron Neville\, with the ability to build an audience rapport that has been compared to B.B. King. \n\n\nKevin is a self-taught musician (vocals\, harmonica\, and guitar) whose smooth\, warm vocal presentation sets a mood of relaxed exhilaration\, with a welcome mixture of serious music and infectious humor audiences of all ages seem to enjoy. His voice and presence are powerful. His unique delivery ranges from the sweetest\, fullest\, juiciest come-on to the most playful growl. \n\nHe is a 2018 International Blues Challenge Winner in 3 categories:  1st place Solo/Duo\, best Solo/Duo guitarist\, & best Harmonica Player award.  Recently also a 2019 Blues Music Award Nominee for Debut Album.  This Waterloo and Mount Pleasant kid’s head is not turned\, however\, and he’s a deep and wide supporter of Iowa music\, musicians\, and music education. \n \nKevin’s talent\, character (and luck\, he would tell you) have taken him to the top of the industry. His new Heartland and Soul album was recorded with the nationally known top sidemen. D’Mar Martin on drums\, Jon Otis (Johnny Otis’ son!) on percussion\, and the bassist to the stars\, Jerry Jemmott! Grammy award winning Jemmott is a true living legend\, playing on so many timeless soul\, blues\, & jazz classics\, from B.B. King’s “Thrill Is Gone” to Gil Scott Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” to Aretha Franklin’s “Think”. \nKevin is also recognized as one of the Midwest’s top blues heritage educators. Governor Chet Culver gave this honor to him in February ‘09. Kevin is a registered artist\, and artist educator with the state of Iowa Arts Council. He has also written and published a classroom harmonica method book called “Just Play It: an introduction to blues harmonica.” His approach is simple: education through entertainment. His program has been going strong since 1994. Kevin continues this work as well as his community work with children and the arts. \nKevin performs between 325 and 400 shows a year\, and he holds nothing back night after night and audiences love that – and they return again and again for more! \nBurt is a serious songwriter who knows how to craft music to fit his personality\, and no one delivers this brand of music better than he does. After listening to Heartland and Soul\, one should have no problem seeing why he took all the top honors at the blues competition – this guy is a real winner. –  Living Blues \nIn this day and age where celebrity status is often conveyed on people with little discernible skills or talent\, it is refreshing when the spotlight finally lands on someone who has worked hard\, paid their dues\, and actually deserves recognition for their talent. Such is the case with Kevin “B.F.” Burt\, the singer and multi-instrumentalist who created quite a buzz on Beale St. in Memphis during the first three days of this year’s International Blues Challenge\, winning 3 awards !! – 1st place in the Slolo/Duo category\, the Cigar Box Guitar Award for best guitarist in Solo/Duo category\, and the Lee Oskar Award for best harmonica player!” – Mark Thompson\, BLUES BLAST MAGAZINE \n\nTickets\n$20 Gen. Admission/$50 VIP Seating/Student $5. Kevin Burt follows in the footsteps of performers like Freebo\, Ellis Paul\, Tim Grimm\, Phil Heywood\, Radoslav Lorković\, Claudia Nygaard\, Chuck Mitchell\, Dave Moore\, and Suzie Vinnick. \nLilFest brings extraordinary music into an intimate setting\, with an opportunity to meet the musicians\, hear a great performance\, listen\, laugh\, have a memorably musical evening. \nRe-use or buy an Uptown Theatre sippy Cup ($5) from the Uptown Theatre\, fill it with your beverage of choice\, and stroll right in. \n**  Audience members are invited to reserve an early dinner before the concert at the Palisades Café\, mention LilFest\, and receive the evening’s LilFest special.  ** \nPLEASE SHARE

DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHAREDue to the health concerns regarding public gatherings this particular IDEA Sangha session has been canceled.  At this time we are still planning on holding our other sessions.  Be safe\, be well\, we look forward to seeing you after this passes. \n\nInner Dimensional Engineering Agreement Sangha (IDEA Sangha)\nWe are a product of Evolution\, a very slow process. Once evolved as Humans we progressed very rapidly through inventions which gave us a succession of ever improved tools for easier and yet easier living. All these inventions dealt with things around us. However\, the evolutionary process being very\, very slow our physiology and psychology have not kept up to deal with the consequences of what we have created. For example\, various chemicals while most of them made our life easier also prove to be dangerous to health and environment. This has a compounding effect into the future affecting us and our children and so on. \nThis situation calls for our turning inwards to change our attitude to do what need to be done in directing Human evolution from now on for our survival. This is being Mindful. \nTherefore\, I have created a forum\, Inner Dimensional Engineering Agreement Sangha (IDEA Sangha) for like minded people to discuss what attitudinal changes we are to adopt. \nWe will meet on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month at 1PM\, in the Library. \nAll are welcome. \nPlease address any questions to jpattur@gmail.com \nPLEASE SHARE

SUMMARY:Canceled - IDEA - Intelligent Discussion and Expression Association
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHAREDue to the health concerns regarding public gatherings this particular class session has been canceled.  At this time we are still planning on holding our other sessions. \n\nIntelligent Discussion and Expression Association (IDEA)\nI moved to Mount Vernon from Hawaii and am enjoying living in such close-knit community. I want to be involved and engage other community members toward a common understanding in these contentious times. \nWe all have lots of pent-up thoughts going nowhere and wasted. I have started a discussion forum\, Intelligent Discussion and Expression Association (IDEA)\, for open dialogue on broad subjects — such as\, “why we do things the way we do without a second thought?” — where people are free to express their innermost thoughts in a friendly surrounding and get response. \nWe meet on 2nd Mondays of each month at 6PM\, in the Focus Room. \nPlease address any questions to jpattur@gmail.com \nPLEASE SHARE
