DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHAREWe are thrilled to have a live performance by guitarist\, singer and songwriter Phil Heywood on Saturday\, June 9\, 2018  show starts at 7:30 pm with doors opening at 7:15 pm. \nPhil Heywood plays fingerstyle guitar with a bluesy swing and a bucketful of whatever it takes to turn an instrumental piece into an arresting lyrical narrative. His lucid playing encompasses the down-home rhythmic groove of a Mississippi John Hurt or Leadbelly\, and the sheer fluidity and melodic flair of such contemporaries as Leo Kottke. \nThe internationally renowned Kottke handpicked Mr. Heywood to tour and perform duets with him. A soul-satisfying instrumentalist\, Phil Heywood draws listeners in with his voice as well\, singing in a warm\, plainspoken baritone that blends smoothly with his rock-solid guitar work. \nRecently Dave Moore and Phil Heywood have been sharing stages\, trading songs and embroidering rich instrumental accompaniment on each other’s songs and melodies. \nWhile born and bred in Mount Vernon\, Iowa\, Mr. Heywood has been based in Minneapolis-St. Paul since the mid-eighties\, performing locally and regionally while also establishing himself in the greater guitar and acoustic music world. \nIn 1986 he won the National Fingerpicking Championship\, and followed up a year later by winning the American Fingerstyle Guitar Festival Competition. \nPhil has played on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion with guitar legend Chet Atkins\, performed with fellow acoustic guitar luminaries Peter Lang\, Pat Donohue\, Tim Sparks\, and Dakota Dave Hull\, and opened shows for such artists as Norman Blake\, Greg Brown\, John Renbourn\, Chris Smither\, and John Hammond. \nPhil Heywood has recorded six CDs: Some Summer Day (1990)\, Local Joe (1996)\, Circle Tour (2000)\, Banks of the River (2003)\, You Got To Move (2008)\, and Rollin’ On (2014). DESCRIPTION:PLEASE SHAREMore Than Just a Game: African American Athletes in Iowa is part of a series of Hometown Teams events.  Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street traveling exhibit “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America” will be in Mount Vernon\, Iowa from March 18 to April 28\, 2018.  It is one of ten related events that is scheduled while the exhibit is in Mount Vernon. \nSince the late nineteenth century\, African Americans have participated in a variety of sports and contributed in profound ways to Iowa’s sporting culture. African Americans experienced severe discrimination in sports as in other activities\, but fought long and hard to overcome racism. In Iowa\, they frequently used achievement in sports as a way to come together as a community. In Toronto\, on his first out of town gig\, he met a boney blonde songwriter named Joni Anderson\, from Saskatoon\, Saskatchewan. They married\, and as a duo Chuck and Joni Mitchell played the coffeehouse circuit and gin rummy\, until she was 115\,463 points ahead. They got divorced in 1968. \nThe folk clubs faded\, and Mitchell moved on to college and arts council residencies. He lived in Coconut Grove\, Santa Monica\, and Greeley. In the eighties\, he wandered back to the Heartland\, and settled in a tall brick Keokuk house overlooking the Mississippi\, built by a riverboat captain in 1879. \nMitchell’s credits include A Prairie Home Companion and repertory theater in the US and the UK. He has played Harold Hill in The Music Man\, Woody in Woody Guthrie’s American Song\, and Stephen Foster in Mr. Foster & Mr. Twain. Oh\, and Carl Sandburg. \nHis one man cabaret folk show combines his skills as an actor\, singer and guitarist. He sings songs by Guy Clark\, Fred Eaglesmith\, B. J. Shaver\, Michael Peter Smith\, and Cheryl Wheeler\, and cabaret songs by Brecht and Weil — “Mack the Knife” and “Bilbao” — and whimsical songs by Flanders & Swann — “The Gnu” and “The Hippopotamus”. He roves the room singing “Freeborn Man” by Ewan McColl. He weaves poetry by Carl Sandburg\, T.S. Submit your design choice on the BARNS & BREWS webpage as soon as possible to reserve your spot. Colors are selected the day of the class. We periodically post new designs on our FB page. These can also be painted in the class even if they aren’t in the catalog yet. \n Each design will have a difficulty designation:\n (E) = Easy (I) = Intermediate (D) = Difficult \n Intermediate = Includes curved lines to cut and/or some color-next-to-color freehand painting.\n Difficult = Includes lots of curved lines to cut and/or lots of color-next-to-color freehand painting. \n *COLOR SELECTION: When picking your colors\, keep in mind that due to the drying time of the enamel paint and the process we use to paint the signs\, it is best not to paint color next to color. Color-next-to-color painting requires a steady hand and freehand painting. The colors may run and bleed into each other. Therefore\, it is best to keep white space between each color. There are a few designs in our catalog with some color-next-to-color painting which takes a steady hand\, but the majority of them are easy enough for any novice.  \n PRIVATE PARTIES: Private parties can be scheduled with a minimum of 10 people. The parties can be held at the Mount Vernon Community Center for a $30 room rental. If you want a private party at the Community Center\, you pay the $30. You can bring snacks and drinks (alcoholic or non). If you do not have 10 or do not want to pay the $30 room rental for a private class\, we can open up the class to the public to fill the empty spots up to 16 people and we will pay the $30 Community Center charge.  \n CUSTOMIZATIONS: Some customizations hand painted and/or designed by Hugh Hoffman can be made to the barn quilts with pre-approval. Minimal customizations such as the addition of a letter on Design # 10 or #13 is an additional $10 charge. Custom designs not included in our catalog can be done if approved by Hugh for an additional $20 as long as they do not have a lot of color-next-to-color painting and if they can be designed to work with the BARNS & BREWS method. Submit any customizations with your design choice when reserving your spot.
