Below are some of the classes offered for the month of June, 2016. Be sure to check our “Classes” menu often to see what others we’ve added.

Barns and Brews – Barn Quilt Painting

Paint your own customized 2’ x 2’ barn quilt on exterior grade aluminum.

Select your design from our catalog on the Barns & Brews Facebook page. We draw the design for you and you paint it in any color(s)* that you pick the day of the class using high gloss professional grade sign painters lettering enamel.

No skill required!!! Anybody can do it. The sign is lightweight and can be hung inside or outside without any further treatment.

These musical mice are just an example of what you can do. During this 2 hour class you will learn to hand sew a wool mouse with it’s own personality. Please bring your own pair of sharp scissors (if you have them) and your imagination!

Alcohol ink is a bright and fun medium for the beginner or advanced artist! It is the perfect medium for those who have little or no art training, as well as the experienced artist who wants to relax, unwind and allow their creativity to flow.

Students will be shown a variety of alcohol ink techniques to complete their final projects. Students who have had previous alcohol ink classes will be shown new methods and techniques.

First Friday Art Exhibit and Reception for Michael S. Ryan

We invite you to join us for Michael S. Ryan’s Reception and Art Exhibit on Friday, June 3rd, 5:30 to 7:30pm.

Light refreshments and beverages served in the Library (adjacent to the gallery) in the First Street Community Center.

The public is welcome and encouraged to come. Meet Mike and nosh with us, it’s very casual.

Michael S. Ryan has been a painter for 40 plus years. Trained in the late 60s and early 70s as an abstract painter, he has concentrated in the last 30 years on colorist impressionism, featuring both landscape and figurative subject matter.

He studied under Byron Burford, Joseph Patrick, and Michael Tyzack at the University of Iowa, as well as, at Old Dominion University and Drake University.

Ryan is a teacher, as well as, a full time painter. He is widely known for his colorist theories.

The artist will be available to visit with.  The exhibit will stay up for the rest of the month, until the next reception.  We invite the public to join us, no reservation, or fees and dress casual… just come!

Live Music – From Minneapolis – Mount Vernon’s Own Phil Heywood – Saturday, June 4th

The First Street Community Center is thrilled to announce that Phil Heywood will be performing as part of the LilFest 2016 Spring Music Series. This performance will be Saturday, June 4th at 8pm in the Uptown Theatre.

Picture of musician Phil HeywoodMount Vernon’s Phil Heywood is a winner – both of the National Fingerpicking Championship & then of the American Fingerstyle Guitar Festival Competition!

A veteran of NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion with guitar legend Chet Atkins, Phil performs with peer acoustic guitar luminaries Peter Lang, Pat Donohue, Tim Sparks, and Dakota Dave Hull.

He also opens shows for such artists as Norman Blake, Greg Brown, John Renbourn, Chris Smither, and John Hammond.

He has recorded six CDs. For one of his recordings he received the following endorsement:

Acoustic guitar fans should consider this recording a must have….Heywood gives us all something to enjoy for a long time. (Music Reviews Quarterly)


Created by Nancy Emrich Freeman, LilFest has been bringing world-class touring performers to Mount Vernon-Lisbon since 2011.   Past Concerts have included James Lee Stanley, Guy Mendilow Trio, Radoslav Lorković, Red Sea Pedestrians & more…

For these concerts, the suggested contribution is $15. Seating is limited. Subscription Sponsorships for this performance @ $20 each ensure center front section seating if received at least 2 days in advance of the performance.

Mount Vernon Farmers’ Market  – 2016 Summer Season Starts Today

Thursdays 4pm – 6pm on the First Street Community Center front lawn.

From their Facebook page, they describe their offerings:

Located in downtown Mt. Vernon, our market is a thriving little community of entrepreneurs. All our products are raised, produced, or created right here in the surrounding community by the person selling them on the other side of the table.

Beautiful vegetables, delicious artisan breads, jams and jellies. We have several different varieties of local, grass-fed meats as well as farm fresh eggs available. Gluten-free products and tasty treats are here, along with honey, shag-bark hickory nuts, walnuts and dry herbs. Hand-dipped chocolates, exquisite hats, scarves and baby items. Handcrafted jewelry is a must-see, perfect for gifts. Dried beans, fresh ground cornmeal, popcorn, and meat seasoning mixes!
