Someone sneezes. Someone can’t get a signal. Someone won’t answer the door. Someone put an elephant on the stairs. Someone’s not ready to talk. Someone is her brother’s mother. Someone hates irrational numbers. Someone told the police. Someone got a message from the traffic light. Someone’s never felt like this before.

In this fast moving kaleidoscope, more than a hundred characters try to make sense of what they know.

Starmites – A Rock Musical – performing in the Uptown Theatre

MVLCT's Poster for Starmites

Starmites is a delightfully over the top sci-fi 80’s rock musical that uses a fantasy world to drive home poignant lessons about the awkwardness of growing up when you don’t quite fit in.

Outsider, Eleanor Fairchild has built an imaginary world around the sci-fi comic books she collects. On the same day her Mom convinces her to give up her fantasy of becoming a superhero, Eleanor instead finds herself mysteriously thrust into the world of her favorite comic book, Starmites. She lands in the middle of the battle between evil villain Shak Graa, and the Starmites, guardians of Inner Space. She and the Starmites team up on a quest to keep power out of Shak Graa’s greedy hands.

Along the way they meet a colorful assortment of Bowie-esque villains including the flamboyant Diva, Queen of Inner Space and her Banshee warriors – Destiny’s Childish sirens.

Starmites’ music and lyrics are by Barry Keating.  It was first presented in 1980.  It opened off-Broadway in 1987 and on-Broadway on April 27, 1989, where it ran for 60 performances. It received six Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical.

According to the Starmites website:

With the timeless appeal of THE WIZARD OF OZ and LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, yet unique, STARMITES is exciting, touching, and great fun for the entire family.

Live Theatre – And Then There Were None – by Agatha Christie

PLEASE SHARE

The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Theatre presents Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None”

One of the classic murder mystery stories of the 20th century.  Agatha Christie’s dramatization of one of her darkest and most successful mystery novels is set in a house on a remote island off the coast of Devon, England in the 1940’s. The plot revolves around ten strangers who are summoned there because they have a secret past in common.

Each visitor has been marked for murder and, one by one, they are killed in the order dictated by a sinister nursery rhyme about ten little soldiers. As a storm rages outside, there is no escape. This is a classic murder mystery drama by one of the masters of the genre!

Do they deserve it? Who is the murderer? Who will be the next victim? Will anyone leave the island alive to tell the tale? Will anyone in the audience figure it out before it’s too late?

Performances Thursday, March 8th – Saturday March 10th at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, March 11th at 2pm.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors.

Tickets can be purchased at the event, or before by calling 319-535-2030 and asking for tickets to the show.

Just in time for Halloween – The Iowa Goatsinger – Near Fear

PLEASE SHARE

Representing the Iowa Goatsinger, Mike Moran is premiering a fresh solo performance piece, “The Iowa Goatsinger: Near Fear”, a mix of story, movement, song, and generally foolish behavior.

Blending humor, tragedy, and a good, old-fashioned creep-factor, “Near Fear” is an exploration of those moments of high-anxiety that tends to take us by the throat – whether it be in the anxiety of confronting your girlfriend’s father or making your way bravely towards the spooky sounds coming from deep in the woods.

When: “The Iowa Goatsinger: Near Fear” plays Oct 27, 7:30pm to 9pm.

Tickets: $10 dollars at the door.
