John describes his artistic journey below:

“I grew up knowing I would one day become a professional artist, and in 1990, my choice was clear. After a stint in college, I made a deep commitment to myself that I would forge a free and creative life. A life in which I would seek my own knowledge and grow and master my domain, one conscious experience at a time. Artfully by choice, with conviction and truth.

It’s been more than 25 years now, and through it all, I’ve made art of all shapes and sizes. I’ve been a commercial screenprinter and a sign maker as well as commercial art director, a graphic designer and an illustrator. But from prints to public art, I’ve always been a painter first. A soulful creator. A thinker and a doer. A philosopher who paints.

Today, I make art full time. I make bold, dynamic and seemingly animated paintings that combine my wide array of experiences, attributes and skillsets into one singular expression of line, shape, form and color. I work in the abstract, breaking up space, creating visual rhythm, velocity and movement. I also work in representational narratives like portraits and still life. And over the years I’ve co-mingled the two, and I’ve succeeded in creating my own brand of hybrid images, which I collectively call “Anamorphic Pop!”.”

-John Paul Schafer

First Friday Art Reception for Nancy Lindsey – May 6th

facebook_event_596235050541738Please join us for our May 6th First Friday Art Reception and Exhibit featuring the work of Nancy Lindsay.

Beverages and light refreshments will be served 5:30 to 7:30pm in the Library, adjacent to the gallery, in the First Street Community Center.

The public is welcome, come casual and meet Nancy.

“From an early age, landscape has been the guiding theme of my painting. I am excited by the play of light and color in natural outdoor settings, which shapes my style.

Communicating that excitement to the viewer is my artistic goal. Most of my canvases are done in the studio, but I am also inspired by working en plein air, where the direct experience of landscape can be freely and directly interpreted. For the viewer, I hope to convey an uncomplicated joy in the natural world.

Most of my canvases are done in the studio in Stone City, Iowa, but I am also inspired by working on location (en plein air) and working to complete a painting in one session (alla prima). One always makes friends with a painting easel; people, especially children are immediately drawn to it. Painting in public gives me the opportunity to inspire those who have never seen an artist at work”.
