Radoslav Lorkovic plays Mount Vernon’s LilFest
The Uptown Theatre, First Street Community Center The Uptown Theatre, 221 First Street NE, Mount Vernon, IA, United StatesRadoslav Lorković began touring at age 20 with Iowa City's Bo Ramsey and the Sliders. Lorković entered the band having mastered the styles of boogie-woogie greats such as Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson, Freddie Slack etc..
Ramsey’s influence drove Lorković deeper to the core of the blues. The music of Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and Little Walter shifted Lorković’s focus to the basics as he began to draw from the styles of Otis Spann and Pinetop Perkins.
His tenure on the R&B and folk circuits has culminated in five critically acclaimed solo recordings and numerous appearances on the recordings of and performances with artists including Odetta, Jimmy LaFave, Ribbon of Highway Woody Guthrie Tribute, Greg Brown, Richard Shindell, Ellis Paul, Ronny Cox, Dave Moore, Andy White, and Bo Ramsey.

Uptown Theatre Honors 2019
FeaturedThe Uptown Theatre, First Street Community Center The Uptown Theatre, 221 First Street NE, Mount Vernon, IA, United StatesThe 2019 Uptown Theatre Honors is an evening Gala celebrating the arts. It is on Saturday, September 7, 2019 starting at 6:30 pm with a cocktail hour and the show will begin at 7:30 pm.
This year’s honorees include Dale Beeks, Doug Hanson, Fred and Marion Lehman, Ed Sauter, and Amy White. The honors gala will include tribute speeches, live musical numbers, a photo opportunity and much more.
“These honorees are the people that continually make our community a great place to live, work and visit,” said Lisa White, Chair of the Uptown Theatre Honors volunteer committee. ”We hope all of the community will show up and show their appreciation for these six honorees and their many contributions to our communities.”

The Black Panthers
Come and listen to a historical presentation about The Black Panther political party on Thurs., Nov. 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Library of the First Street Community Center.
Join us for a presentation and conversation about the Black Panthers with a woman who worked for them in the '70's. You may be surprised to learn about the many positive things the Black Panthers were a part of.
Christine Flavin will talk about how she became involved in the civil rights movement when she was in high school. She later went on to attend the University of California, Berkeley in 1971.
